Zoysia vs. bermuda vs. fescue: the best grass for Central Arkansas lawns

Central Arkansas sits in a tricky "transition zone" where both warm-season and cool-season grasses can grow โ€” which is why there's no single right answer. Here's how the three most common choices stack up for a yard around Hot Springs.

Zoysia โ€” dense, fine, and heat-tough

Zoysia is a warm-season grass that forms a thick, fine-bladed carpet that crowds out weeds and handles our hot, humid summers well. It takes moderate foot traffic, needs less mowing than bermuda, and tolerates some light shade. It does go dormant (tan) in winter. The Matrella zoysia we grow on our farm is our top recommendation for many local lawns for exactly these reasons.

Bermuda โ€” fast, sunny, and high-traffic

Bermuda is the toughest for full sun and heavy use โ€” think play areas and sports. It repairs itself quickly and loves heat. The trade-offs: it needs full sun (it thins badly in shade), grows fast so it needs frequent mowing, and can creep into beds. Also goes dormant in winter.

Fescue โ€” the shade & winter-green option

Tall fescue is a cool-season grass that stays green through winter and handles shade better than the warm-season grasses โ€” good for tree-heavy yards. The catch is our summers: fescue can struggle in extreme heat and often needs overseeding to stay thick year to year.

Quick guide

Not sure which fits your yard's sun and use? Tell us about the space and we'll point you the right way โ€” and if zoysia's your pick, here's how professional Zoysia installation works (and why the sod is free).

Want a new Zoysia lawn?

We grow our own Zoysia โ€” so when WeCare installs your new lawn, the sod is free (save $250/pallet, 3-pallet minimum). Prefer to lay it yourself? You can still buy sod by the pallet.
