Guides ยท Hardscape
It's one of the most common questions we get for a backyard project around Hot Springs: should the patio be pavers or poured concrete? Both work well here โ the right answer depends on your budget, the look you want, and how the space will be used. Here's an honest comparison, plus a third option most people don't know about.
Poured concrete is usually the more budget-friendly option per square foot, which is why it's so common. Pavers cost more up front because of the material and the hand-laying labor โ but individual pavers can be lifted and reset if something shifts, so repairs are simpler down the road. For most yards, concrete wins on lowest starting cost; pavers win on easy spot repairs.
Central Arkansas soils move โ clay swells and shrinks with our wet springs and dry summers โ and that's hard on any hardscape. A plain concrete slab can crack along that movement if it isn't prepped and jointed well. Pavers flex a little with the ground because of the sand-set base and the joints between them, so they hide small shifts better. The real deciding factor with either one is the base prep and drainage underneath โ done right, both last for decades; done poorly, both fail early.
Pavers give you pattern, color blends, and defined borders out of the box. Standard concrete is plainer โ but it doesn't have to be, which brings us to the option most homeowners haven't considered.
Poured concrete doesn't have to look like a gray slab. Our signature work is custom carved and sculpted concrete โ we shape, carve, color, and texture concrete so it can look like natural flagstone, cut stone, or a one-of-a-kind feature, while keeping concrete's lower material cost and monolithic strength. It's how we give a patio the character of high-end stonework without the seams and shifting of individual pieces. See how carved concrete artistry works โ
If you want the lowest up-front cost and a clean, simple patio, poured concrete is hard to beat. If you love the look of individual stones and want easy long-term repairs, pavers are worth the premium. And if you want the richness of stone with the strength and value of concrete, carved concrete is our specialty. The best way to decide is to walk the space with us and talk through your goals and budget.
