Low-water & drought-smart landscaping in Arkansas

Our Central Arkansas summers get hot and dry, and water bills climb right along with them. A drought-smart landscape isn't gravel and cactus โ€” it's a lush, beautiful yard designed so it needs less water to look great. Here's how it's done.

Right plant, right place

The foundation is choosing heat- and drought-tolerant plants โ€” many of them native or well-adapted to Arkansas โ€” and grouping them by how much water they actually need. Thirsty plants in full sun fight you all summer; the right plant in the right spot mostly takes care of itself once established.

Rethink how much lawn you water

Turf is the thirstiest part of most yards. You don't have to give up grass โ€” but sizing the lawn to what you actually use, and choosing a drought-tolerant grass like zoysia for it, cuts water use a lot. The areas you don't walk on can become beds, ground cover, or hardscape instead.

Mulch and soil do the heavy lifting

A good layer of mulch keeps soil moisture in and roots cool, and healthy, prepped soil holds water far better than the compacted clay many yards start with. These unglamorous steps are what let a landscape coast through a dry spell.

Hardscape that earns its space

Patios, walkways, dry creek beds, and stonework give you beauty and function with zero watering โ€” and a dry creek bed can double as drainage during our heavy rains. Worked into the design, hardscape reduces the thirsty area while making the yard more usable. Our carved concrete and stonework are a natural fit here.

Water smart where you do water

Efficient irrigation โ€” drip lines in beds, well-zoned systems, and watering deeply but less often โ€” delivers water to roots instead of the air. Small design choices add up to a yard that looks full and healthy on a fraction of the water.
